Sinaloa Cartel Kingpins Busted in Imperial Valley Fentanyl-and-Methamphetamine Takedown

Forty-seven defendants, including a U.S. Border Patrol agent, have been charged in connection with a massive fentanyl and methamphetamine trafficking operation linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, authorities announced.

According to court documents, the defendants were operating throughout the Imperial Valley, supplying dealers with drugs in communities across the region. The investigation, which involved over 400 law enforcement officials, resulted in the seizure of more than four kilograms of fentanyl, which amounts to about two million potentially fatal doses, as well as over 324 kilograms of methamphetamine.

The arrests were made in Imperial County, San Diego, Fresno, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Salem, Oregon, with 36 defendants taken into custody and 11 remaining fugitives. The operation, dubbed a “decisive blow” against the Sinaloa Cartel, was the result of a long-term investigation into the cartel’s Imperial Valley-based distribution network.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland praised the work of law enforcement officials, saying, “This takedown is yet another blow to the Sinaloa Cartel and its associates. We will continue to be relentless in our fight to protect American communities from the cartels.”

U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath added, “This investigation tore apart a drug trafficking network responsible for supplying dealers in communities across the region. But there is still much work to be done. If you’re a parent, and today’s price of fentanyl terrifies you, talk to your kids about the dangers of drug use. If you’re an addict, and your dealer was arrested today, seek treatment. And if you’re a dealer but your supplier was arrested today, look out – we are coming for you next.”

The investigation also resulted in the arrest of Alexander Grindley, a 38-year-old U.S. Border Patrol agent, who is accused of methamphetamine trafficking while employed with the agency. The charges against the 47 defendants include drug trafficking, money laundering, and gun-related offenses.

The operation was led by the U.S. Department of Justice, with assistance from the Department of Homeland Security, the El Centro Border Patrol Sector, and other law enforcement agencies. The case is ongoing, with authorities continuing to seek the remaining fugitives.

The Imperial Valley-based distribution network is believed to have been responsible for supplying dealers with fentanyl and methamphetamine in communities across the region. The operation is a testament to the power of law enforcement collaboration and the commitment to bringing criminals to justice.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California will continue to prosecute the case, with assistance from the U.S. Department of Justice and other law enforcement agencies.

The case is a reminder that justice will be served, and those responsible for trafficking deadly drugs will be held accountable. The investigation and operation are a direct result of the multipronged and coordinated law enforcement approach to preventing fentanyl and other deadly drugs from being produced, distributed, or consumed.
