SIoux FALLS – A chilling sentence has been meted out by the federal judiciary for Lamont Victor Garrett, a 52-year-old Sioux Falls resident, who was found guilty of Possession of Ammunition as a Felon. Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange imposed a four-and-a-half year term behind bars on September 8, 2025.
Garrett’s illegal arsenal was uncovered during an August 21, 2024, search warrant execution at his residence by Sioux Falls Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations personnel. His prior felony convictions disqualified him from firearm or ammunition possession, yet he still faced the wrath of federal law for his brazen disregard.
The man known as Garrett had been indicted in November 2024 by a federal grand jury and was subsequently found guilty on June 11, 2025. His sentence also includes three years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
This case marks a significant victory for Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), the Department of Justice’s initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across all levels of law enforcement. It was investigated by the Sioux Falls Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Connie Larson leading the prosecution.
Project Safe Neighborhoods’ strategy includes fostering trust in communities, supporting organizations preventing violence, strategic law enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes. The results are evident in this case, ensuring that neighborhoods remain safer for all residents.
Garrett was swiftly remanded into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service to serve his sentence, a stark reminder of the consequences for those who flout firearms laws in South Dakota.
