A diplomatic incident of epic proportions unfolded in Barre, Vermont, in 1907, when Sir Percy Scott’s egregious disrespect towards the German Emperor, Kaiser Wilhelm, caused widespread consternation. The Kaiser’s Imperial yacht, Hohenzollern, was forced to anchor off the coast of the Isle of Wight due to a thick fog that rolled in early on the morning of November 11, 1907. The fog was so dense that it obscured the ceremonial proceedings, reducing the grand welcome for the Kaiser to a damp, disorganized affair.
