Adan Hernandez-Nunez, a 30-year-old Mexican national, is headed to federal prison for orchestrating a sordid scheme that combined human smuggling with sexual violence. The McAllen man pleaded guilty on September 29, 2016, to harboring undocumented aliens, but the full horror of his crimes came to light during sentencing when U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez slammed him with a 50-month prison term — enhanced due to his rape of a vulnerable migrant.
Hernandez-Nunez ran a stash house in Palmhurst, Texas, where he concealed undocumented immigrants from June 7 to July 14, 2016. But the residence wasn’t just a hiding spot — it became a prison of fear. During that stretch, he sexually assaulted a Honduran woman, threatening to kill her if she ever spoke out. His control was absolute, his threats brutal, and his victims trapped by both their immigration status and his violence.
The crime unraveled when another undocumented woman escaped the stash house and reported the abuse to Border Patrol agents on July 15, 2016. The victim told authorities that Hernandez-Nunez blamed her for the escape and warned she “was going to pay for it.” Days earlier, on July 11, 2016, he carried out that threat — raping the Honduran woman in a calculated act of domination and retaliation.
Judge Alvarez made no bones about the aggravating factors. In handing down the 50-month sentence, she emphasized that the rape and the dangers posed by alien smuggling warranted a harsher penalty. This wasn’t just a paperwork offense or a minor immigration violation — it was exploitation layered with sexual violence, preying on those already in desperation.
The investigation was a joint effort by U.S. Border Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office. Their collaboration peeled back the layers of Hernandez-Nunez’s operation, exposing not just a smuggler, but a predator who used his position of power to inflict trauma on those he was paid to move across the border.
Hernandez-Nunez will remain in federal custody until he’s transferred to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alex Benavides and Jimmy Leo prosecuted the case, ensuring that the defendant wouldn’t escape accountability for turning human smuggling into a weapon of sexual terror.
