Smuggler Admits Role in Alien’s Death

TUCSON, Ariz. – A human smuggling coordinator will face years behind bars after admitting his role in a scheme that led to the death of an illegal alien. Nathan Jr. Espinoza, 23, of Avondale, Arizona, pleaded guilty on August 6 to one count of Conspiracy to Transport Illegal Aliens for Profit. He’s slated to be sentenced on October 16, 2025, before United States District Judge Angela M. Martinez.

According to court documents, Espinoza wasn’t just moving bodies; he was profiting from desperation. From an unspecified time leading up to March 2024, he actively recruited drivers and orchestrated the transportation of at least 25 illegal aliens from the Mexican border into the United States. It was a cold calculation – human lives as currency.

The grim details of March 6, 2024, paint a stark picture of the callousness involved. Espinoza coordinated a pick-up near Lukeville, Arizona, where a driver and passenger collected two illegal aliens. While en route, the aliens were ordered out of the vehicle, then subjected to a terrifying ordeal. They were either jumped, fell, or were pushed from the still-moving vehicle. One of them slammed into the ground, suffering injuries that proved fatal two days later in the hospital.

Espinoza’s plea confirms his direct involvement in a dangerous operation with deadly consequences. The charge of Conspiracy to Transport Illegal Aliens for Profit carries a maximum sentence of ten years in federal prison and a staggering maximum fine of $250,000,000. Whether he receives the maximum remains to be seen, but the evidence points to a calculated disregard for human life.

This case is the product of Joint Task Force Alpha (JTFA), a multi-agency operation spearheaded by the Department of Homeland Security and backed by the Attorney General. JTFA’s mandate is clear: dismantle the cartels and transnational criminal organizations fueling the human smuggling crisis. To date, JTFA claims over 405 domestic and international arrests, 350 U.S. convictions, and 305 significant jail sentences.

Homeland Security Investigations led the investigation, with the United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, Tucson, handling the prosecution. The case number is CR-24-05407-TUC-AMM (Release Number: 2025-133_Espinoza). This isn’t just one conviction; it’s a small battle won in a much larger, ongoing war against those who exploit vulnerability for profit. For more information, visit http://www.justice.gov/usao/az/.
