Son of Meth Kingpin Gets 70 Months

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – The son of a notorious drug kingpin has been slammed with a hefty prison sentence for his role in a sprawling, multi-state methamphetamine distribution network. Jose Leonardo Alvarez, 25, of Riverside, California, was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison after pleading guilty in March 2020 to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.

The case unravels a disturbing tale of criminal continuity. Alvarez’s father, Jose Maria Valencia, was already serving time in California state prison on a conspiracy to commit murder conviction when he continued to orchestrate the drug operation. From behind bars, Valencia oversaw the movement of over 250 pounds of ice methamphetamine. He didn’t work alone; he exploited family ties, turning to Alvarez to keep the operation running.

Alvarez acted as his father’s eyes and ears on the ground in Iowa, traveling to the state multiple times to gather intelligence and report back to Valencia on the status of the drug ring. He wasn’t just an observer. He actively participated by collecting money generated from the sale of methamphetamine within Iowa, effectively laundering proceeds for his incarcerated father. Alvarez managed to evade authorities for over two years, becoming a fugitive before his capture in September 2019.

The sentencing was handed down in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge Linda R. Reade. Beyond the 70-month prison term, Alvarez will also be subject to a five-year term of supervised release upon his release. Federal sentences don’t include parole, meaning Alvarez will serve the entirety of his sentence. He is currently in the custody of the United States Marshals, awaiting transfer to a designated federal prison.

This takedown was a collaborative effort led by Assistant United States Attorney Lisa C. Williams, as part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) program. The DEA spearheaded the investigation, working alongside a massive coalition of law enforcement agencies including the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Cedar Rapids Police Department, and numerous other local and county departments throughout Iowa. The sheer scale of the task force underscores the widespread impact of Valencia’s operation.
