In a shocking turn of events, a federal jury in the ILCD Federal District Court in Illinois handed down a guilty verdict against Carlos Javier Soto-Rivera, a 32-year-old resident of Chicago, for his involvement in a violent crime that shook the city in 2019.
Soto-Rivera, who was arrested on March 20, 2019, was charged with conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering, as well as attempted murder in aid of racketeering, according to court documents filed on March 11, 2019.
The case against Soto-Rivera was a complex one, involving allegations of ties to a local street gang and involvement in a plot to murder a rival gang member. Prosecutors presented evidence that Soto-Rivera had played a key role in planning and attempting to carry out the murder, but ultimately failed in their efforts due to the bravery of the intended victim and the swift intervention of law enforcement.
The trial, which lasted several weeks, heard testimony from numerous witnesses, including several members of the street gang with whom Soto-Rivera was allegedly affiliated. The prosecution presented a wealth of evidence, including wiretapped conversations, text messages, and other communications that implicated Soto-Rivera in the crime.
After deliberating for several hours, the jury delivered a guilty verdict, finding Soto-Rivera guilty on both counts. The defendant’s lawyer had argued that his client was simply a scapegoat for more senior gang members, but the jury ultimately rejected this argument.
Soto-Rivera now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, with a maximum possible sentence of life imprisonment. Sentencing is set to take place in the coming weeks.
