SYRACUSE, NY – Nikolay Souslov, a 70-year-old Russian national using multiple aliases – Nikolay Glukhov, Nikolai Kuznetsov, and Nikolai Burov – was convicted today of alien smuggling after a four-day trial. The verdict confirms what federal investigators suspected: Souslov ran a shadowy operation guiding individuals across the US-Canada border under the cover of darkness.
The case, announced by United States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian and Chief Patrol Agent John C. Pfeifer of the Swanton Sector Border Patrol, detailed a scheme spanning from 2013 to October 19, 2016. Evidence presented at trial revealed Souslov, an experienced orienteer, exploited the remote wooded areas along the border. He allegedly used only a compass to navigate illegal entrants through the treacherous terrain, leading them to a pre-arranged pickup point for transport onward to New Jersey.
Souslov was apprehended on October 19, 2016, while in the act of guiding another individual into the United States. The arrest brought an end to a long-running operation that skirted traditional border security measures. While the jury found him guilty of alien smuggling, they acquitted him on the charge of smuggling for financial gain, suggesting the motive wasn’t purely profit-driven – a detail that raises further questions about the true nature of the operation.
The prosecution, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas G. Collyer, successfully demonstrated Souslov’s consistent involvement in these nighttime border crossings. The reliance on a simple compass, coupled with his orienteering expertise, painted a picture of a calculated and deliberate effort to bypass legal immigration channels. This wasn’t a case of opportunistic assistance; it was a planned and executed smuggling operation.
Souslov now faces a potentially lengthy prison sentence. He is eligible for up to 10 years behind bars, followed by up to 3 years of supervised release. Chief United States District Judge Glenn T. Suddaby will hand down the sentence on October 4, 2017. The final determination will consider the specific charges, U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, and other relevant factors.
Souslov has remained in custody since his arrest. The investigation was conducted solely by the United States Border Patrol. This conviction serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by border security and the lengths to which individuals will go to circumvent the law, even with basic tools and a reliance on antiquated navigation techniques.
