Jason P Summers, Discharging Firearm, Missouri 2015

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In a gritty turn of justice, Jason P. Summers, 33, of North Kansas City, was handed a 10-year sentence for discharging a firearm into the air during a high-octane police chase.

Summers’ criminal escapade began on August 19, 2015, when he attempted to flee from law enforcement after being flagged down for a pedestrian check. The bold act of firing two shots in the air, while attempting to escape, did not go unnoticed by officers who were quick to engage in pursuit.

Summers’ defiance led him into hiding behind vehicles in a parking lot. His luck ran out when North Kansas City police apprehended him and recovered an SCCY Industries 9mm pistol, loaded with ammunition, and various controlled substances. The evidence painted a picture of a man deeply entangled in the drug trade.

Summers confessed to being part of a methamphetamine distribution conspiracy and claimed the firearm was stolen from his father for protection against the hazards of drug trafficking. His fear of being caught as a felon with the gun prompted him to flee and discharge rounds into the air, hoping to increase his distance from officers.

The U.S. District Judge Brian C. Wimes’s sentence reflects the severity of Summers’ actions, emphasizing the dangerous nature of his behavior during the chase and the subsequent threat posed by the firearm.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Davids is handling this case with the assistance of the North Kansas City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The sentence handed down serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who threaten public safety through violent means.
