South Bend Gunman Gets 9+ Years: Allen Sentenced
SOUTH BEND – James Allen, 34, of South Bend, Indiana, is headed to federal prison for over nine years after a judge handed down a harsh sentence for illegally possessing firearms and narcotics. Allen was sentenced to 110 months imprisonment, followed by two years of supervised release, by United States District Court Judge Damon R. Leichty, United States Attorney Clifford D. Johnson announced today.
The bust went down in January 2023 when Allen was apprehended on existing warrants. A search revealed a disturbing cache: three loaded firearms. Authorities recovered a handgun, a revolver, and a particularly dangerous AR-style pistol equipped with an extended magazine. Adding to the severity of the charges, Allen was also found to be in possession of both heroin and methamphetamine.
This wasn’t Allen’s first brush with the law. Court documents reveal he’s a convicted felon – twice over. Both prior convictions legally barred him from owning or possessing any firearms. The combination of illegal weapons and narcotics, coupled with his criminal history, painted a clear picture for the judge, and the sentence reflects that.
The investigation was a multi-agency effort, spearheaded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Support came from the United States Marshals Service, the Indiana State Police – including their forensic laboratory – the St. Joseph County Police Department, and the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office. Assistant United States Attorneys Katelan McKenzie Doyle and Joseph P. Falvey prosecuted the case.
Federal officials are framing the sentencing as a victory for Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a broad initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and local communities. The Department of Justice launched a strengthened PSN strategy in 2021, emphasizing trust-building, community support, targeted enforcement, and measurable results. This case is a direct outcome of that renewed focus.
Allen’s case serves as a grim reminder that illegal gun possession carries severe consequences, especially for repeat offenders. The Grimy Times will continue to track federal crime in Indiana and beyond, bringing you the unvarnished truth about the justice system and the individuals caught within it.
