South Bend Man Gets 16 Years for Meth, Gun Hoard

Christopher Kinds, 35, of South Bend, Indiana, is headed to federal prison for 192 months after pleading guilty to possessing over 500 grams of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and illegally possessing firearms as a convicted felon. U.S. District Court Judge Damon R. Leichty handed down the 16-year sentence, followed by two years of supervised release, in a packed courtroom that saw no remorse from the repeat offender.

Kinds’ criminal spree came to a halt on September 5, 2019, when federal and local agents descended on his South Bend home and rented storage units. What they uncovered was a cache of illegal firepower and narcotics: more than 2 kilograms of methamphetamine, over 80 grams of heroin, nearly $17,500 in cash, and a staggering 35 firearms. The haul, found on his person, inside his residence, and in secured storage, paints the picture of a man deeply entrenched in the drug trade and armed to the teeth.

U.S. Attorney Kirsch made no apologies for the severity of the sentence. “Mr. Kinds, a felon with multiple prior convictions, will serve 16 years in prison for his guilty plea to possessing over 500 grams of methamphetamine and possessing firearms,” Kirsch stated. “Possession of a firearm by a felon or during the commission of other crimes is dangerous and intolerable.” He emphasized that cases like this are central to the Justice Department’s Project Safe Neighborhoods strategy in South Bend, which targets violent offenders and illegal gun possession.

Kinds isn’t new to the federal system. His rap sheet includes prior felony convictions tied to drugs and firearms, marking him as a habitual offender under federal sentencing enhancements. That history played a critical role in the stiff 16-year term. Documents filed in the case confirm that his status as a repeat offender triggered mandatory minimums and drew heightened scrutiny from prosecutors and investigators alike.

The investigation was a joint operation led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with crucial support from the South Bend Police Department, the St. Joseph County Drug Investigations Unit, and the St. Joseph County SWAT Team. ATF Special Agent in Charge Kristen de Tineo praised the interagency collaboration: “The collaborative investigation and prosecution of this habitual offender is a prime example of the partnerships in which ATF takes great pride.”

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Molly Donnelly and Kim Schultz prosecuted the case, weaving together forensic evidence, search warrant returns, and Kinds’ criminal history into an airtight case that ended in a swift plea. With no trial necessary, Kinds now begins his 192-month sentence, leaving behind a trail of drugs, guns, and community danger.
