A 71-year-old man from Hardeeville, South Carolina, has been caught with his hands dirty in a brazen tax heist that left the feds reeling for over $1.2 million. Kevin Biebel, a former New Milford, Connecticut resident, pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return in Hartford federal court.
According to court documents, Biebel operated Art Metal Industries, LLC, a metal fabrication business, from which he raked in more than $1.5 million in gross receipts in 2017 alone. That year, he transferred a whopping $350,000 from the business to his personal bank account for personal expenses.
But that was just the tip of the iceberg. In 2018, the IRS came knocking on Biebel’s door, seeking to collect delinquent payroll taxes from him for his business. Biebel was instructed to file delinquent Individual Income Tax Returns for the 2016 and 2017 tax years, but what he filed was a pack of lies.
Biebel’s returns falsely reported that he had zero total income and zero total tax due for both years. Little did he know, the IRS was watching his every move, and in 2018, AMI received a whopping $2.7 million in gross receipts, resulting in a profit of over $1.2 million. Biebel funneled funds from his business account to his personal account and another account held in the name of Diego Trust LLC, a company he controlled.
Biebel used the ill-gotten gains to purchase a home in South Carolina and other assets, totaling over $750,000. But that was still not the end of it. He also failed to file individual income tax returns for 2018, 2019, and 2020 tax years, leaving the IRS to foot the bill for his negligence.
Biebel’s actions resulted in a whopping $900,000 in tax loss, as well as an additional $300,000 in employment taxes he failed to withhold and pay. The Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation Division took notice of Biebel’s antics and is leading the investigation.
Biebel is facing a maximum term of imprisonment of three years for his crime and has agreed to pay restitution of $1,208,801. He was released on a $50,000 bond pending sentencing, which is set to take place in the coming weeks.
