Violent Crime Spikes in San Diego, California, as U.S. Attorney’s Office Launches Effort to Prosecute Most Violent Offenders.
As reported by the San Diego Police Department, gang-related shootings increased 129 percent in the first half of 2021, compared to 2020, and more than 1,000 guns were recovered pursuant to criminal investigations.
Responding to this spike, federal gun-related prosecutions in the Southern District of California increased in FY 2021 by almost 50 percent – to the highest levels seen in this office.
Most of the defendants were charged with Dealing in Firearms without a license; Possession of Firearms by Prohibited Persons; or Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime or Crime of Violence.
According to Acting U.S. Attorney Randy Grossman, the goal is to reduce violent crime strategically, rather than merely increasing the number of arrests and prosecutions.
