SPENCER, IA – Isaiah Roy Mixon, a 21-year-old resident of Spencer, Iowa, is headed to federal prison after admitting to unlawfully possessing a firearm while actively using drugs. Mixon received a sentence of seven months and 28 days from United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand in Sioux City on September 10, 2020. Following his release, he will serve a six-month term of supervised release – a reality check in a system with no parole.
The bust originated from a routine welfare check on January 6, 2019, conducted by Spencer, Iowa police. Officers arrived at Mixon’s residence to find more than just a concerned citizen’s call. Inside, they discovered 12 grams of marijuana, drug packaging materials, grinders, recently arrived odorless bags, a staggering $12,000 in cash, and a DPMS .223 rifle complete with ammunition. The welfare check quickly morphed into a full-blown federal investigation.
Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild successfully prosecuted the case, building it around the undeniable link between Mixon’s drug use and his illegal possession of the rifle. The prosecution highlighted that possessing a firearm while engaged in illegal drug activity is a serious federal offense, and the court clearly agreed. The case served as a stark reminder that firearms and drug use are a dangerous combination.
Federal authorities framed this case within the larger context of two key initiatives: Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) and Project Guardian. PSN, a Department of Justice program, focuses on collaborative, data-driven strategies to tackle violent crime. Project Guardian, launched in 2019, specifically targets gun violence and enforces federal firearms laws. Both programs aim to not only punish offenders but also to prevent future crime through community partnerships and targeted enforcement.
Mixon remains in the custody of the United States Marshals Service awaiting transport to a designated federal prison facility. His case, filed as 19-CR-4074, underscores the commitment of both local and federal law enforcement to removing illegal firearms from the hands of those who pose a threat to public safety. The Spencer, Iowa Police Department’s initial investigation paved the way for this federal conviction. This case serves as a clear message: those who choose to flout federal firearms laws and engage in illegal drug activity will face the full weight of the law, and the Grimy Times will be there to report it.
