Springfield Golf Pro Skims $135K in Tax Fraud Scheme
A former golf professional from Springfield, Massachusetts, was sentenced to 12 months of probation and ordered to pay restitution for his role in a massive tax fraud scheme.
Ryan McDowell, 32, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni to pay $101,050 in restitution to the City of Springfield and $34,236 to the Internal Revenue Service.
McDowell pleaded guilty to six counts of tax fraud in September 2018, admitting to skimming approximately $101,050 from golf revenues belonging to the City of Springfield between 2011 and 2016.
During that time, McDowell filed false tax returns each year that intentionally omitted the stolen money, resulting in a federal tax loss of $34,236.
The scheme was uncovered through an investigation led by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation, Boston Field Office, in conjunction with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.
Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy praised the efforts of the investigators, saying, ‘This case demonstrates the importance of holding public officials accountable for their actions.’ He added, ‘The restitution ordered today sends a clear message that tax evasion will not be tolerated.’
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Steven H. Breslow and Neil Desroches of the Springfield Branch Office.
The sentencing marks the end of a years-long investigation into McDowell’s actions, which were carried out while he was working as an Assistant Golf Professional for a company that managed two municipal golf courses in Springfield.
The City of Springfield was ultimately the victim of McDowell’s scheme, with the defendant skimming money from golf revenues that should have gone to the city’s coffers.
McDowell’s sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of tax evasion and the importance of transparency in public finance.
As the investigation revealed, McDowell’s actions were not only a crime, but also a betrayal of the public trust.
