Springfield Man Sentenced to 30 Months for Robbing Marine Bank of $6,000

A 29-year-old Springfield man, Kyle W. Harris, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for robbing a Marine Bank branch in Springfield of just over $6,000.

On June 3, 2024, Harris appeared before U.S. District Judge Sue Myerscough and was sentenced to serve a two-year term of supervised release following his imprisonment. The sentence was handed down for the bank robbery that occurred on December 15, 2021.

According to court documents, Harris entered the Marine Bank branch and passed a teller a note indicating he would shoot everyone in the bank. No firearm was brandished, but the actions of Harris still caused terror among the bank employees and patrons.

“The bank employees and patrons were terrorized by the actions of the defendant,” Judge Myerscough noted during the sentencing hearing.

Harris pleaded guilty to the charges on December 1, 2023, and has been in the custody of the United States Marshal since then.

The statutory penalties for bank robbery include not more than 20 years of imprisonment, up to 3 years of supervised release, and up to a $250,000 fine.

The investigation into the case was conducted by the Springfield Police Department with assistance from the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah E. Seberger represented the government in the prosecution.

The case against Harris is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities across the United States.
