Emanuel Yazzie, Statutory Rape of a Minor, New Mexico 2024

A 23-year-old Crownpoint man has been sentenced to 36 months in prison for his role in a statutory rape case involving a minor.

Emanuel Yazzie, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, was sentenced in federal court in Albuquerque to 36 months in prison followed by 10 years of supervised release for his conviction on a sexual abuse of a minor charge.

Yazzie also will be required to register as a sex offender, according to officials.

According to the indictment, Yazzie engaged in a sexual act with the victim, who was under 16 years of age, in the spring of 2014.

The victim was allegedly abused by Yazzie on the Navajo Indian Reservation within San Juan County, New Mexico.

Yazzie was arrested on March 5, 2015, on an indictment charging him with sexual abuse of a minor.

On Dec. 15, 2015, Yazzie entered a guilty plea to the indictment, marking the beginning of the end of the lengthy investigation and prosecution.

This case was investigated by the Crownpoint office of the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle T. Nayback.

Yazzie’s sentencing is a significant victory for law enforcement and a reminder that those who would seek to harm children will be held accountable.
