Fresno Man Charged with Domestic Violence at Yosemite National Park
A 59-year-old San Rafael man has been charged with domestic violence after a violent altercation with his wife at Yosemite National Park last year. Stefan Niels Weiste Kirkeby, 59, was indicted by a federal grand jury and faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
According to court documents, the altercation occurred on August 4, 2022, when Kirkeby and his wife got into a verbal confrontation. The situation escalated to the point where park visitors had to intervene due to the yelling and threats of harm being made by Kirkeby. The victim reported that she was forcibly grabbed by her wrist and both fell to the ground, resulting in bruising, pain to her wrist, and scratches.
Kirkeby allegedly threatened to kill his wife and then himself during the altercation, prompting park visitors to step in and intervene. The National Park Service is leading the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Laurel J. Montoya prosecuting the case.
