A former accounting clerk has been sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison for her role in a mail fraud scheme that defrauded a dairy company in Missouri. Stephanie Baker, 48, of O’Fallon, Missouri, was sentenced by United States District Judge Henry Autrey on December 20, 2023, for three counts of mail fraud.

Baker worked in the accounting department of Prairie Farms Dairy Supply Company, where she was responsible for applying and allocating customer payments to their accounts. However, she devised a scheme to defraud the company and its customers, including DQ Columbia, a Dairy Queen restaurant franchise in southern Illinois.

Between March and December 2018, Baker misapplied approximately $143,933.74 in customer payments to DQ Columbia’s account, while also withholding and not mailing out statements to other Prairie Farms customers. She also falsely represented to the owner of DQ Columbia that cash payments were needed to continue receiving food and supplies from Prairie Farms.

As part of her scheme, Baker received cash payments from the owner of DQ Columbia totaling approximately $48,403.00, which she kept for her own personal use. The Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Hal Goldsmith handled the prosecution.

Baker’s sentencing brings an end to a scheme that defrauded Prairie Farms and its customers out of approximately $192,336.74. The court also ordered her to pay restitution to the victims.
