Steven Robert Hill, a 33-year-old former Missouri Valley resident, was sentenced to 54 months in federal prison on November 17, 2016, for possession of child pornography—a crime uncovered during a domestic assault investigation that quickly spiraled into a disturbing digital evidence hunt.

Hill entered a guilty plea on June 9, 2016, in the Southern District of Iowa, admitting to possessing illicit images of minors. The case exploded open when law enforcement responded to a report of domestic violence with Hill listed as the victim. During routine questioning, officers uncovered evidence that redirected the entire investigation toward Hill himself.

Investigators executed a search of Hill’s residence, where they seized multiple data storage devices. Forensic analysis revealed the devices contained numerous images of child pornography—graphic material that led to immediate federal charges. The discovery shocked the small western Iowa community, where Hill had lived for years under the radar.

Shortly after law enforcement secured the digital evidence, Hill fled Iowa and relocated to the State of Washington. His move triggered a jurisdictional escalation, but federal prosecutors moved swiftly to ensure he faced consequences for his crimes regardless of geography.

Hill was sentenced by Chief United States District Court Judge John A. Jarvey, who imposed the 54-month prison term followed by fifteen years of supervised release. United States Attorney Kevin E. VanderSchel announced the outcome, emphasizing that possession crimes like Hill’s fuel the ongoing abuse of children and will be met with full enforcement of federal law.
