Suffolk Cop Fatality Under OSI Scrutiny

New York – The Office of Special Investigation (OSI) under New York Attorney General Letitia James has initiated a formal probe into the tragic death of Emilson Joan Ordoñez-Banegas, a civilian who succumbed to injuries sustained during an encounter with the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) in Centereach on July 13, 2025.

According to reports, around 8:30 a.m. on the fateful day, SCPD officers were dispatched to the scene of a reported knife assault near retail stores in Centereach. Upon arrival, they found an injured individual with lacerations to his hand and neck being attended to by emergency medical technicians (EMTs). In a turn of events that would lead to tragedy, Mr. Ordoñez-Banegas allegedly moved toward the injured person wielding what appeared to be a knife. In response, one officer discharged his service weapon, critically wounding Mr. Ordoñez-Banegas. He was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is tasked with reviewing all incidents where a law enforcement officer may have caused the death of an individual by act or omission. This includes officers on and off duty, as well as situations where the deceased may be armed or unarmed, in custody, or incarcerated. If an officer’s involvement is deemed worthy of further investigation, OSI proceeds with a thorough inquiry.

These are preliminary facts and the situation remains fluid.

The incident has sparked an outpouring of concern from local residents and law enforcement alike, as it raises questions about the use of force by officers and the need for accountability in such situations. As the investigation unfolds, OSI will work to uncover all pertinent details surrounding Mr. Ordoñez-Banegas’ death.
