Sutanga Rex Cypress, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Florida 2024

Miami, Florida – In a shocking turn of events, Sutanga Rex Cypress, a 42-year-old tribal member, has pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon with intent to bodily harm, assault resulting in serious bodily injury, and discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.

According to court records, on April 26, Cypress was arguing with the victim when he brandished a firearm. He then pointed the gun at the victim and shot the victim in the abdomen. The victim was airlifted to the hospital due to the severity of the injuries sustained by the gunshot.

Cypress faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years for one count and up to 10 years in federal prison for each of the remaining counts. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines along with other mitigating, aggravating, and statutory factors.

Sentencing is set for December 9, 2024, before U.S. District Judge Jacqueline Becerra. The investigation into the case was led by the FBI Safe Trails, Miami, and the Miccosukee Police Department.
