Syracuse Man Accused of Credit-Card Cloning Ring

Syracuse, NY – The grimy details of a credit-card cloning ring have hit the federal court in New York with Deonte Spencer, 35, of Syracuse, being slammed with serious charges. Spencer was held without bail following an arraignment on Wednesday.

The feds say Spencer is accused of masterminding a scheme that included wire-fraud conspiracy, access-device fraud, and aggravated identity theft. If convicted, the 35-year-old faces up to 20 years for wire-fraud, 15 years for the access-device charge, and a two-year mandatory minimum sentence for identity theft.

The indictment alleges Spencer bought stolen credit card numbers and cloned cards, which he and his alleged co-conspirators used to rack up tens of thousands in merchandise and gift cards between 2015 and 2016 in New York and North Carolina. The charges carry a maximum fine of $250,000 and supervised release for up to three years.

Scheduled for trial on July 24, 2017, Spencer will face Senior U.S. District Judge Frederick J. Scullin, Jr.

Investigators from the FBI, the United States Postal Inspection Service, local law enforcement, and state police are credited with the investigation that led to Spencer’s arrest. Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicolas Commandeur is handling the prosecution.

The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
