Syracuse Man Caught with 615 Rounds of Ammo, Controlled Substances

SYRACUSE, NEW YORK – Anthony Beverly, age 34, most recently of Syracuse, walked into federal court today with his head hung low, pleading guilty to a string of serious charges. The Syracuse man admitted to possessing a stash of firearms, ammo, and controlled substances with the intent to distribute.

As part of his guilty plea, Beverly confessed to owning three pistols, extended ammunition magazines, and approximately 615 rounds of ammo of various calibers in his Onondaga County apartment on October 26, 2023. The convicted felon knew he was breaking the law, and his prior conviction in 2015 for possession of a forged instrument in the first degree only added to the severity of his crimes.

Beverly’s apartment was a treasure trove of illicit goods, with the presence of various controlled substances, including cocaine base, powder cocaine, N,N-Dimethylpentylone (sold as ‘molly’), fentanyl, and methamphetamine. The stash was uncovered by a joint investigation between the FBI and the Syracuse Police Department, who have been cracking down on violent crime and gun violence in the area.

The guilty plea has serious consequences for Beverly, who faces up to 35 years in federal prison, a maximum fine of $1,250,000, and a term of post-imprisonment supervised release of at least 3 years and up to life. The sentence will be determined by a judge based on the particular statute Beverly is charged with violating, the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, and other factors.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew J. McCrobie is leading the prosecution of the case, which was charged as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. The Department’s violent crime reduction strategy, launched on May 26, 2021, focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy, supporting community-based organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of gun violence and the devastating impact it has on communities. As the investigation continues, authorities vow to hold perpetrators accountable and ensure that justice is served. In the meantime, residents of Syracuse can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that one less gun-toting dealer is off the streets.

The guilty plea is a major victory for law enforcement, who have been working tirelessly to keep the community safe. With the help of community-based organizations and a focused enforcement strategy, the Department is making strides in reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer for everyone.
