William Howard Taft, Bureau Mismanagement, Washington 1912

The nation’s capital, Washington D.C., was abuzz with news of a impending shake-up in the forestry bureau. President Taft had directed the bureau to discontinue the services of about sixty temporary employees by July 1st, a move sparked by a drastic change in the way the bureau conducts its work. No longer would they be doing much of their work from the nation’s capital, but rather on the ground, in the states. This upheaval comes on the heels of a tumultuous period for the nation’s forestry bureau, with the recent Supreme Court decision in the case of the Waters-Pierce Oil company still fresh in the minds of Americans.
