Talon Lewis, Embezzlement, Missouri 2023

Talon Lewis, a 33-year-old man from St. Charles, Missouri, has admitted to embezzling over $400,000 from his employer.

Lewis, who worked as an accounts payable specialist at a medical business, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in St. Louis to one count of mail fraud. He admitted to hatching the scheme between October 21, 2019, and at least February 19, 2025.

According to the investigation, Lewis would receive lists of patients who were owed refunds and was supposed to upload that information so the company could generate and mail refund checks. However, he added fake patients to the refund lists and then had refunds sent to him or to the homes of friends and acquaintances.

Those friends and acquaintances would then kick back 30% of the money they fraudulently received to Lewis. As a result, he admitted to stealing more than $400,000 in this manner.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Derek Wiseman is prosecuting the case. Lewis is scheduled to be sentenced on April 16.

Mail fraud is punishable by up to 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both prison and a fine. Lewis’s actions have left his employer and the community shaken, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability in the workplace.

This case highlights the need for businesses to implement robust financial controls and monitoring systems to prevent similar schemes from occurring in the future.
