Tammy Laird, Wire Fraud, Pennsylvania 2023

A former high-ranking official in Corsica, Pennsylvania, has been brought to justice after engaging in a years-long scheme to defraud her small town out of over $300,000.

Tammy Laird, 49, the former Secretary and Treasurer of Corsica Borough, was sentenced to 21 months in prison and three years of supervised release for her conviction of wire fraud, announced United States Attorney Cindy K. Chung.

The sentence was handed down by Senior United States District Judge Nora Berry Fischer, who noted that Laird’s actions had a significant impact on the borough’s limited operating funds.

Between January 2009 and August 2017, Laird defrauded the borough by issuing checks to her family members and herself, paying personal expenses and credit card bills, and making purchases on the borough’s business account at Staples, according to the court.

To cover her tracks, Laird provided the Corsica Borough Council and state auditors with altered bank statements and other falsified financial documentation, prosecutors said.

Laird pleaded guilty to all 26 counts of wire fraud in 2020. Judge Fischer ordered her to pay restitution to Corsica Borough in the amount of $265,200.79.

Assistant United States Attorney Carolyn J. Bloch handled the prosecution. United States Attorney Chung commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their investigation into Laird’s crimes.
