The streets of Tampa are a little safer today with the sentencing of Jamaar Danglo Hayes, a 34-year-old man found guilty of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
A U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday handed down the 15-year prison sentence to Hayes, who was also ordered to forfeit the firearm.
The charges stem from an incident in October 2017, when Hayes was seen driving to an apartment complex on Sligh Avenue in Tampa with a .38 caliber revolver.
Multiple witnesses at the complex called 911 after spotting Hayes with the firearm, and responding officers found the revolver on him.
Hayes, a convicted felon, is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition under federal law.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Tampa Police Department, with Assistant United States Attorney Jay G. Trezevant leading the prosecution.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer for everyone.
Tampa’s Attorney General Jeff Sessions reinvigorated the program in October 2017, directing all U.S. Attorneys’ Offices to develop districtwide crime reduction strategies.
U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez coordinates PSN efforts in cooperation with various federal, state, and local law enforcement officials in the Middle District of Florida.
The guilty plea was entered by Hayes on April 25, 2018, following a thorough investigation and prosecution.
