Tax Evasion Rocks Idaho Town
A shocking case of tax evasion has rocked the small town of Caldwell, Idaho, as 57-year-old Herminio Sandoval pleaded guilty to conspiracy to attempt to evade and defeat tax.
According to court documents, Sandoval and his unindicted co-conspirators owed more federal tax for the calendar years 1998 through 2012 than they claimed and paid. The defendant agreed that he failed to report $750,000 in income to the Internal Revenue Service.
The charge of income tax evasion is punishable by up to five years imprisonment, a term of supervised release of not more than three years, and a maximum fine of $250,000 or twice the defendant’s gain.
U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson announced the plea agreement, which marks a significant victory for tax authorities in the region. Sandoval’s sentencing is scheduled for October 21, 2014, before United States District Judge Edward J. Lodge.
The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigations, highlighting the importance of vigilance in preventing tax evasion.
