PHOENIX – In a shocking turn of events, a member of the Havasupai Tribe has been sentenced to prison for a brazen robbery that shook the community.
Taylor Nardo Paya, 20, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Douglas L. Rayes to five years in prison followed by three years of supervised release for his role in the December 2015 robbery.
The crime, which occurred on the Havasupai Indian Reservation, saw Paya assault a victim in the front yard of a residence before stealing a number of her personal effects.
According to sources close to the investigation, Paya’s actions were a clear breach of trust within the tight-knit community, leaving many to wonder how such a heinous crime could have occurred.
The investigation into the robbery was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Christine Keller handling the prosecution.
