Tax Fraud Scheme Unfolds in Lake Wales: A Look at the Charges Against Tedderick Fields
By Grimy Times Staff
Tampa, Florida – In a stunning display of financial malfeasance, Lake Wales resident Tedderick Fields has been indicted on serious tax fraud charges. The indictment, which was recently unsealed in a Tampa courtroom, accuses Fields of filing false claims with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and stealing another individual’s identity to claim a refund.
According to the indictment, Fields filed false tax returns in his own name between 2011 and 2013, claiming a whopping $400,000 refund in 2012. In addition to this egregious act, Fields also filed a false and unauthorized tax return in another individual’s name, claiming a refund of $6,546. To pull off this brazen scheme, Fields used the victim’s personal identifying information without their consent.
The indictment charges Fields with three counts of filing false claims with the IRS, one count of wire fraud, and one count of aggravated identity theft. If convicted, Fields faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison for the wire fraud charge, with an additional two-year consecutive sentence for the aggravated identity theft charge. He also faces up to five years’ imprisonment on each of the false claim charges.
An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law. As such, every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty.
The case against Fields was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation and assisted by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Kelley Howard-Allen will prosecute the case.
