A shocking case of greed and deception has come to an end in Mason City, Iowa. Teresa Dorenkamp, a 42-year-old former employee of a financial brokerage firm, has been sentenced to over five years in federal prison for her role in a brazen embezzlement scheme.
According to court documents, Dorenkamp stole $391,725.31 from multiple clients of the financial brokerage firm between May 2007 and August 2011. The money was fraudulently obtained by Dorenkamp, who would deposit it into her own bank account or that of her husband’s. In one instance, on June 3, 2011, Dorenkamp had $36,139.60 wire transferred from a client’s investment account into her own bank account, forging the client’s signature in the process.
Dorenkamp pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft on August 26, 2013. In a plea agreement, she admitted to causing $391,725.31 in fraudulent transfers and deposits.
Dorenkamp was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade to 65 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $200 was also imposed, and she was ordered to make $391,725.31 in restitution. She must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Anthony Morfitt and investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Mason City Police Department.
Teresa Dorenkamp’s crimes have left a trail of financial devastation in her wake, and it’s a harsh reminder of the devastating consequences of white-collar crime. As Grimy Times continues to investigate the details of this case, one thing is clear: justice has been served.
With her prison sentence, Dorenkamp will have plenty of time to reflect on her actions. The question remains, what led her down this path of deceit and greed?
