Tereso Cazares Galindo, 38, of Michigan City, Indiana, is headed to federal prison after being caught back in the U.S. following his deportation for armed robbery—a crime that should have kept him out for good. Galindo was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison and slapped with two years of supervised release after pleading guilty to illegally reentering the United States, a violation of federal immigration law.
The sentence, handed down by South Bend District Court Judge Jon E. DeGuilio, marks the latest consequence in a criminal trajectory that began over a decade ago. In October 2004, Galindo was deported to Mexico after being convicted of armed robbery—a violent felony that triggers automatic removal and strict bars on reentry. Despite that, he returned to the country and lived in the shadows until federal agents caught up with him in April 2016.
Records show no attempt by Galindo to legally return. Instead, he reentered the U.S. without authorization, a serious federal crime when tied to a prior felony. Prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana emphasized the danger posed by repeat offenders slipping back into communities after being formally removed.
“This isn’t a paperwork error—it’s a pattern,” said U.S. Attorney David Capp. “When someone is deported following a violent felony like armed robbery and then sneaks back in, public safety is compromised. We’re not looking the other way.”
The investigation was led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), with support from the South Bend Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jesse M. Barrett, who argued for a sentence that reflected both the seriousness of the offense and Galindo’s criminal history.
Galindo now faces the full weight of the federal system, with 33 months behind bars followed by two years under government supervision. His return to the U.S. may have been quiet—but his punishment won’t be.
