A chilling crime has shaken the quiet community of Heart Butte, Montana. Terrance Travis Aimsback, a 34-year-old resident, has been slapped with a second-degree murder charge in the death of a woman on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation.
The indictment, filed on January 25 in U.S. District Court, alleges that Aimsback knowingly and unlawfully killed the victim, identified as Jane Doe, on November 24, 2022, in Heart Butte.
The maximum penalty for the crime is life imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and five years of supervised release. Aimsback is currently in federal custody, awaiting an arraignment date.
According to a statement from U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich, the indictment is merely an accusation, and Aimsback is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The FBI, with assistance from Blackfeet Law Enforcement Services and Pondera County, investigated the case.
An indictment is a formal accusation, but it does not necessarily mean a conviction will follow. Aimsback’s fate will be decided in the courtroom, where the prosecution will need to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case is being monitored through the U.S. District Court Calendar and the PACER system. To access the court’s calendar, visit https://ecf.mtd.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/PublicCalendar.pl.
