A Jefferson County man has been handed a stiff sentence for his role in a February 2022 traffic stop that turned into a high-speed chase.
Terrell Corey McMullin, 31, of Fairfield, was sentenced to 87 months in prison for illegal possession of a firearm, announced U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Special Agent in Charge Marcus Watson.
The case against McMullin began on February 1, 2022, when a Pleasant Grove police officer attempted to make contact with McMullin during a traffic stop. McMullin sped away, leading the officer on a chase that ended in a wreck.
During the search of the abandoned vehicle, the officer found a Glock 9mm pistol with an installed ‘Glock switch’ in the driver’s seat. The device is designed to illegally convert a semiautomatic pistol into a fully automatic machine gun.
The Glock was later determined to be stolen, adding another charge to McMullin’s rap sheet. In October 2023, a jury convicted McMullin of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities across the nation. On May 26, 2021, the U.S. Attorney’s Office launched a violent crime reduction strategy based on four core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy, supporting community-based organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
The ATF investigated the case along with the Pleasant Grove Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael A. Royster and William R. McComb are prosecuting the case.
McMullin’s sentence brings an end to a case that highlights the dangers of gun violence and the importance of community-based programs aimed at reducing crime.
