Cocaine Worth Tens of Millions Seized in Miami

A brazen attempt to smuggle over 300 kilograms of cocaine into Miami has landed two U.S. Virgin Islands police officers and four others in hot water. According to a federal indictment, the suspects used a private flight to transport the massive haul of cocaine, which was discovered by Customs and Border Protection officers at the Opa-Locka Executive Airport on January 12.

The suspects, identified as Teshawn Adams, 26, Tevon Adams, 26, Anthon Berkeley, 26, Roystin David, 28, Maleek Leonard, 27, and Shakim Mike, 29, were charged with cocaine trafficking crimes in a federal court. Teshawn Adams and Mike live in St. Thomas and are officers with the U.S. Virgin Islands Police Department. David and Leonard also live in St. Thomas. Tevon Adams lives in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Berkeley lives in Orlando.

Allegations state that Teshawn Adams accepted an offer from someone in the Virgin Islands to transport cocaine to South Florida in exchange for money. The two police officers then arranged a private flight from the Virgin Islands to South Florida, bringing the cocaine on board. The X-ray machine at the Opa-Locka Executive Airport revealed the presence of the cocaine, packaged as 294 individually plastic-wrapped bricks, weighing over 300 kilograms.

Teshawn Adams and Mike were joined by defendants David and Leonard on the private flight, while Tevon Adams and Berkeley stood ready to transport the jet travelers and the cocaine from the airport to other areas of Florida. The indictment alleges that the suspects intended to distribute the cocaine in Miami and other parts of South Florida.

HSI and CBP investigated the matter, with assistance from the Miami-Dade Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Yeney Hernandez is prosecuting this case.
