Texas Con Man Accused of $1M MRI Fraud

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Texas man has been charged in federal court with wire fraud for orchestrating a $1 million scheme involving fake MRI sales to Dallas Medical Center.

Albert Davis, 54, of Richardson, Texas, is accused of conspiring with unnamed co-conspirators to defraud the hospital by posing as representatives of Kansas City-based Cerner Corporation. The hospital paid over $1 million for MRIs that were never delivered.

Davis was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud in a sealed complaint filed on February 12, 2015, and unsealed upon his arrest. He remains in federal custody after being arrested in Texas.

The scheme began May 1, 2009, and involved Davis convincing Dallas Medical Center employees that he and his co-conspirators were affiliated with Cerner. The hospital then transmitted two wire payments to the conspirators’ account totaling $1,061,550.

United States Attorney Tammy Dickinson praised Cerner’s swift reporting of the fraud. “Cerner acted quickly, notifying the hospital and law enforcement, which was crucial to our investigation,” Dickinson said.

Davis and his co-conspirators are alleged to have created a fake Cerner entity, opened a fraudulent bank account, registered a fake domain, set up email accounts, leased office space in Kansas City, and posed as various professionals to perpetuate the fraud. They also established numerous business entities across several states, often using similar names and addresses.
