DAVENPORT, Iowa – A Texas man was handed a 24-month federal prison sentence on August 7, 2025, for his relentless campaign of terror across state lines. Stephen Brody Crain, 30, from San Antonio, Texas, was found guilty of interstate transmission of threats that spanned eight months and targeted two Iowa victims and their families.
According to court records and presented evidence, Crain employed various channels to send his chilling messages, including monetary demands, false reports to the Iowa Department of Human Services, and deliveries of pizza to the victims’ homes. His demands were met with over $4,000 in payments. The psychological warfare didn’t end when law enforcement caught up; Crain continued to send letters even after being arrested.
Crain’s criminal history includes a stalking conviction in Texas District Court for Smith County, where he engaged in similar tactics: sending threatening messages, sending pizza, and making false abuse reports to child services. His parole was granted in November 2023, only two months prior to the threats against Iowa residents.
Following his sentence, Crain will also serve a three-year term of supervised release, with no possibility of parole under federal law. He has been ordered to pay $4,117 in restitution. United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentence, noting the case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
Crain’s actions were a stark reminder of the reach and severity of cyber-enabled crimes that transcend state borders, underscoring the importance of federal jurisdiction in such cases.
