Texas Trio Guilty of Robbing Mail Carrier at Gunpoint

Grimy Times Exclusive: Three men from Texas have pleaded guilty to robbing a mail carrier at gunpoint, stealing a U.S. Postal Service master key, a crime that could lead to sensitive information falling into the wrong hands.

The defendants, Jlynn Laneil Dunn, 21, Daylin Darden, 24, and D Colby Vashion Lewis, 23, were charged with robbery of mail matter, money, or other property of the United States after they allegedly stole a U.S. Postal Service master key from a mail carrier at gunpoint on October 2, 2023.

According to court documents, the defendants approached the mail carrier, identified as T.W., and demanded the master key, which is used to access mailboxes and retrieve mail deposited in blue collection boxes. Unauthorized possession of these keys can lead to identity theft, credit card fraud, and other financial crimes.

Surveillance video captured the robbery and the defendants’ subsequent flight. During a search of an address associated with one of the defendants, law enforcement recovered guns, drugs, mail, checks, and a DVR system. The DVR footage showed all three robbers gathered at the residence prior to the robbery and returning afterwards, with one of the defendants, Darden, seen exiting with a gun matching the one used during the robbery.

A search of Dunn’s Instagram account revealed a direct message sent 10 to 12 minutes before the robbery that read, “I’m tryna go get us a key rn so I can get these real scam money.” This message suggests that the defendants were planning the robbery in advance and were motivated by financial gain.

The defendants now face up to 10 years in federal prison and are set to be sentenced on September 3. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service conducted the investigation with the assistance of the Fort Worth and Arlington Police Departments, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Beck prosecuting the case.

The guilty plea marks a significant victory for law enforcement and a warning to those who would seek to exploit the U.S. Postal Service for their own gain. As one law enforcement official noted, “This case highlights the importance of vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies in preventing and investigating crimes related to the U.S. Postal Service.”
