A brutal display of violence in a Waterloo convenience store has led to a 31-year-old man being sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. Thaddeus Southall, from Waterloo, Iowa, received the prison term after pleading guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a felon on April 18, 2013.
On November 2, 2012, Southall assaulted an individual inside the store. As the victim left, Southall threatened to shoot the store clerk if they called the police. He then proceeded to hit the victim again outside the store and shot at the victim’s car as it drove away. When arrested by the Waterloo Police Department, Southall resisted and kicked a police officer in the head.
Southall’s guilty plea was a direct result of the evidence against him, and he was sentenced to the maximum 10 years in prison by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade in Cedar Rapids. In addition to his prison term, Southall must pay a $100 special assessment and serve a three-year term of supervised release after his imprisonment.
The case against Southall was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at enhancing the prosecution of gun crimes through cooperation between local, state, and federal agencies. The prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt, with the investigation conducted by the Waterloo Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
The sentence handed down to Southall reflects the seriousness of his crimes and the need to protect the community from violent offenders. The fact that Southall was willing to use a firearm to intimidate and harm others demonstrates a clear disregard for the law and the safety of those around him.
Southall is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison to begin serving his sentence. The case file number is CR 13-2006, and court file information is available at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl. This sentence serves as a reminder that violent crime will not be tolerated and that those who break the law will be held accountable.
In a community where gun violence is a serious concern, the prosecution of cases like Southall’s is crucial in maintaining public safety. The cooperation between local and federal agencies in this case demonstrates a commitment to addressing the issue of gun crime and ensuring that those who pose a threat to the community are brought to justice.
