In a dramatic turn of events, a desperate attempt to spirit away the notorious Harry K. Thaw from jail was foiled yesterday, thanks to the swift intervention of a Medford court. The plot, which eerily echoed the highly publicized case of Thaw’s own crime, was exposed when Chief of Police John H. Loudron of Ashland applied for a writ requiring Thaw’s production in court on Tuesday to explain why he shouldn’t be released. Judge Hurlburt H. Hurlbut issued the writ, giving Thaw’s lawyers a chance to fight it. The grand jury’s indictment, issued in regular form, left the court with little option but to grant the writ, and the delay until Tuesday was the only consideration they had the power to show. Thaw’s attorneys, forewarned of the development, had a plan ready to counter the writ when the hearing opens. They sharply criticized Chief of Police Loudron for applying for the writ, suggesting he had been swayed by promises of a hefty reward if Thaw were returned to Matteawan in New York. Meanwhile, the New York returnees are no doubt eager to get their hands on Thaw, who stands accused of murdering architect Stanford White in a highly publicized case.
