A 49-year-old Thibodaux man is facing serious time after pleading guilty to possession of stolen mail. Joel Raymond Polaski, a highway contract route driver, was employed by Advantage Equipment, LLC, a company contracted by the U.S. Postal Service to transport mail matter.
According to court documents, Polaski possessed several parcels belonging to others that he had stolen from the Gray, Louisiana post office. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service investigated the case and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Loan “Mimi” Nguyen.
Polaski, a resident of Thibodaux, Louisiana, pled guilty in federal court today before U.S. District Judge Helen G. Berrigan. He faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five years, a fine of $250,000 and three years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment. Sentencing is scheduled for August 28, 2013.
Advantage Equipment, LLC, a company contracted by the U.S. Postal Service, was left wondering how one of their own could betray the trust. The U.S. Postal Service relies on contracting companies like Advantage to transport mail matter safely and effectively.
Polaski’s guilty plea has left many in the community wondering how someone with a clean record could fall so far. The investigation is ongoing, and it is unclear how long Polaski had been stealing mail.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has been working closely with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to bring Polaski to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Loan “Mimi” Nguyen is handling the prosecution.
As the investigation continues, the community is left to pick up the pieces and wonder how someone they trusted could betray that trust. The guilty plea serves as a reminder that no one is above the law, and those who break it will be held accountable.
