Federal prosecutors have exposed a brazen bribery and kickback scheme that rocked Hudson County’s Parks Department, with two former directors and a local vendor admitting their roles in the corruption scandal.
Thomas A. DeLeo, the former Hudson County Parks Department Director, and William A. Murray, a business owner, each pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit honest services fraud. The charges stem from a scheme where Murray allegedly funneled bribes and kickbacks to DeLeo in exchange for favorable treatment in Parks Department contracts.
DeLeo, who served as parks director for years, leveraged his position to steer lucrative contracts to Murray’s company. In return, Murray provided DeLeo with cash payments and other benefits, defrauding taxpayers of fair competition and honest government services.
The conspiracy unraveled after investigators uncovered a pattern of suspicious payments and contract awards. Murray would submit inflated invoices for work performed by his company, with the excess amounts serving as kickbacks to DeLeo. The scheme continued for years before federal agents intervened.
A second former Hudson County Parks Department Director has also been charged in connection with the corruption scheme, though details of that individual’s alleged involvement remain sealed pending further court proceedings.
Both DeLeo and Murray face significant prison time and financial penalties. The case highlights ongoing concerns about public corruption in Hudson County’s government operations and the vulnerability of municipal contracting processes to exploitation by unscrupulous vendors and officials.
