A Jacksonville man is facing serious charges after allegedly orchestrating a massive tax return fraud scheme, netting him over $100,000 in illicit refunds.
According to a 35-count indictment, Thomas Bandzul, a former tax return preparer, knowingly and willfully made false claims for deductions and credits on behalf of his clients.
Between January 2008 and May 2011, Bandzul allegedly prepared and furnished false tax returns to the IRS, claiming additional refunds that he would then receive as payment for his services.
The indictment alleges that Bandzul used various identities to electronically file tax returns, further complicating the scheme and avoiding detection by the IRS.
In addition to the tax return fraud charges, Bandzul is also accused of committing aggravated identity theft and wire fraud, facing up to 20 years in prison on each count.
Bandzul’s individual tax returns were also called into question, with the indictment alleging that he claimed a total income of $14,945 on his amended 2008 tax return, when he was paid $208,967 in fees, and $9,536 in total income on his 2009 tax return when he was paid $335,452 in fees.
The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation and will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Dale R. Campion.
Bandzul made his initial appearance before United States Magistrate Judge Joel B. Toomey and was released on a $25,000 bond.
