Thomas Popillo, 61, of Newington, has been charged with embezzling labor union funds.
A former president of the Communications Workers of America Local 81266, Popillo served in the position from 2003 through 2017. He also held the role of secretary-treasurer from 2003 to 2015.
According to court documents, Popillo embezzled approximately $37,568.68 of labor union funds. He received unauthorized checks from the union’s bank account and made unauthorized purchases using the union’s debit card.
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Labor Management Standards is leading the investigation into Popillo’s actions. Assistant U.S. Attorney Margaret E. Maigret is handling the case.
Popillo waived his right to be indicted and pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement and theft of labor union funds. He faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five years.
Popillo is currently out on a $25,000 bond pending sentencing. A sentencing date has not been scheduled.
