PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – On July 26, 2016, a brazen act of destruction shook the FBI-Pittsburgh Headquarters. Thomas Ross, a 49-year-old Ohio resident, pleaded guilty to willfully injuring or committing depredation against any property of the United States.
Ross’s egregious actions involved driving a large dump truck through the security gate of the FBI Pittsburgh Field Office, located at 3311 East Carson Street in Pittsburgh. He proceeded at a high rate of speed, inflicting extensive damage on the gate and security barriers. Upon hitting the ground, the vehicle became airborne, striking a nearby light post in the interior parking lot.
The total amount of loss attributable to Ross’s actions will be determined at sentencing. The government estimates the cost to repair and replace the gate and security barriers was approximately $175,000, and the cost to repair the light post was approximately $13,684. Additional security personnel were hired during the repair process, incurring further costs to the FBI.
Ross’s actions have led to a significant financial burden for the FBI. The total estimated cost of damages stands at $188,684. This staggering amount is a testament to the severity of Ross’s crime.
The case against Ross was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Adam N. Hallowell. The Pittsburgh FBI and Pittsburgh Bureau of Police conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution.
Thomas Ross is scheduled to be sentenced on June 13, 2018. The law provides for a maximum total sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. Ross’s actual sentence will be determined based on the seriousness of the offense and his prior criminal history, if any.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting security protocols and the consequences of failing to do so. As the investigation and prosecution of Ross’s actions come to a close, the FBI remains committed to protecting its personnel, facilities, and the public it serves.
