SYRACUSE, NEW YORK – A convicted sex offender has pleaded guilty to violating the terms of his supervised release after being caught viewing child pornography at his counseling service.
Thomas Sczerbaniewicz, 52, of Syracuse, was convicted of possessing child pornography in 2009 and was on supervised release at the time he committed the current offense.
According to the FBI, Sczerbaniewicz accessed the internet using a mobile phone in the bathroom of his sex offender counseling service in January 2021 and viewed child exploitation images.
The FBI’s Syracuse Mid-State Child Exploitation Task Force, which includes FBI Special Agents and Investigators of the New York State Police, Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), investigated the case after a referral from the United States Probation Office.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael D. Gadarian is prosecuting the case as part of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched in May 2006 to combat child exploitation and abuse.
Sczerbaniewicz faces at least 10 years and up to 20 years in prison on the new conviction, as well as a term of supervised release of between 5 years and life.
The Court will determine Sczerbaniewicz’s sentence based on the statute he violated, the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, and other factors.
