Lorton Man Sentenced to 16 Years in Prison for Attempted Armed Robbery
A Lorton man was sentenced to 16 years in prison for his role in a violent attempted armed robbery that went horribly wrong in June 2016.
Thomas Todd, 33, was convicted by a federal jury on Sept. 19, 2017, of attempted robbery, attempted possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and the use and discharge of a firearm during those crimes.
The crime took place in the basement of an apartment building in Lorton, where Todd conspired to rob a drug dealer at gunpoint. However, the plan was foiled when the drug dealer arrived at the apartment building with an armed associate on the evening of June 24, 2016, and a shootout occurred in the lobby.
The shootout led to a lengthy investigation and prosecution by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Fairfax County Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Fahey and Special Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ankush Khardori and Samuel Lord prosecuted the case, which resulted in a conviction and sentencing by U.S. District Judge Liam O’Grady.
Todd’s sentence of 16 years in prison is a just outcome for his role in this violent crime. The attempted armed robbery and use of a firearm put innocent lives at risk, and his sentence sends a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
