Three men have been brought to justice for their role in robbing an armored car driver of cash and a firearm in Overland, Missouri last year.
Herman Leon Woods, 31, of Missouri, pleaded guilty Tuesday in U.S. District Court in St. Louis to one count of robbery. His co-defendants, David C. Greenwade, 62, and Phillip Keith Smith, 65, also pleaded guilty to their roles in the heist.
The robbery took place on April 14, 2023, in the 9400 block of Midland Avenue in Overland, Missouri. The armored car driver was making a cash drop at a store when two men wearing all black clothing, ski masks and body armor arrived in a black Jeep. One robber approached the driver with a pistol and demanded that he hand over his gun.
After the driver relinquished his firearm, he ran into the store for help, while the robbers made off with a bag containing $2,000 and a duffel bag containing empty bank bags. Phillip Keith Smith, one of the robbers, was armed with a rifle, but lost control of it when he was knocked to the ground by the Jeep’s driver, David C. Greenwade.
The investigation into the robbery was conducted by the FBI and the Overland Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Torrie J. Schneider is prosecuting the case. All three men are scheduled to be sentenced in the coming months, with Woods facing a September 5, 2024 sentencing date, Greenwade in July, and Smith in August.
Woods is facing up to 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both prison and a fine for the robbery charge. Phillip Keith Smith’s firearm charge carries an additional, consecutive mandatory minimum seven years in prison, but is punishable by up to life in prison.
The case highlights the brazen nature of the robbery and the importance of swift and effective law enforcement action in bringing perpetrators to justice. The FBI and the Overland Police Department are to be commended for their role in investigating and prosecuting this case.
