HOUSTON, Texas – A brazen scheme to deceive the IRS has been brought to justice, as a local tax preparer has admitted to aiding and assisting in the preparation of false U.S. Individual Income Tax Returns.
Tiffany Phenix, a tax preparer at Phenix Tax Service in Alice, Texas, has entered a guilty plea to the serious charges. As part of her plea, she stipulated that she prepared a total of 37 false income tax returns for clients and four false income tax returns for herself, resulting in an intended tax harm to the IRS of over $284,000.
The egregious crimes were committed between 2015 and the present day, with Phenix going to great lengths to deceive the tax authorities. She admitted to preparing a false 2015 income tax return for a taxpayer, which included creating a false form W-2, claiming false wage amounts, a false Earned Income Tax Credit, and a false income tax refund.
The IRS-Criminal Investigation conducted the investigation, uncovering the depths of Phenix’s scheme. Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles J. Escher is prosecuting the case.
Phenix is now facing the consequences of her actions. U.S. District Judge David S. Morales accepted the guilty plea and set sentencing for July 22, 2024. At that time, Phenix faces up to three years in prison and a possible $250,000 maximum fine. She was permitted to remain on bond pending the hearing.
